“I knew which part of the offer to question”
“My university offer said TV-L E13 but I had not understood that the Stufe was a separate decision. We mapped my earlier research employment against the experience wording and prepared the documents HR might ask for. They did not recognise every period, but they did move the starting step. The summary was dense in places; the call made it manageable.”
— Nadia, research administrator
Two offers, different working weeks
Jonas was choosing between a municipal role under TVöD-VKA and a private employer. The private offer had the larger monthly number; the municipal role had fewer weekly hours and a named annual special payment. We converted both to annual gross figures, kept uncertain bonuses outside the guaranteed column, and listed the pension question for an independent adviser.
“The comparison did not tell me which job to take. It showed what I was trading: time, guaranteed pay, and uncertainty. That was exactly the decision I needed to make.”
— Jonas, civil engineer
“A job title was not enough”
“I expected a quick yes or no on whether my group was correct. Instead, we went line by line through the Tätigkeitsmerkmale and my actual duties. That was less comforting, but more honest. I used the prepared agenda with my manager and got an updated job description before discussing classification.”
— Priya, project coordinator
Returning after parental leave
For Klara, the question was not a new group but when the next step date would fall after an absence. We identified the relevant clause, separated parental leave from other forms of leave, and prepared a written request for HR to confirm the date.
“I appreciated that Mara stopped short of legal advice and showed me the exact point that needed employer confirmation. HR replied with the date and reasoning, so I now have something clear on file.”
