You do not need to argue about the entire salary system. Start by asking HR to confirm the coordinates used for your offer or current pay.
Questions that produce usable answers
- Which collective agreement and employer area apply? Ask for the exact name, not only “public-sector tariff.”
- Which pay group and experience step have been assigned? Request both values.
- Which pay table and effective date produced the amount? Tables change after negotiated increases.
- What full-time weekly hours underlie the table figure? This matters when converting a part-time percentage.
- Which periods of previous experience were recognised for my entry step? Include employer names, dates, and relevant duties in your request.
- When is my next step progression expected? Ask for the date and clause used.
- Which recurring or annual additional payments apply to this role? Distinguish guaranteed allowance, conditional supplement, and discretionary benefit.
Give HR enough context
Quote the contract section or offer line you are asking about. Attach only the relevant page and avoid sending unrelated personal data. If your question concerns duties and classification, provide a short factual list of recurring responsibilities rather than relying on the role title.
Know when to seek representation
An explanation from HR may settle a missing fact. A continuing dispute about classification, discrimination, unpaid wages, or a deadline can require a works council, staff council, trade union, or employment lawyer. Preserve documents and obtain qualified advice promptly rather than waiting for an informal conversation to resolve a time-sensitive claim.
